I wouldn't say the essence of the book is threatened though they add dimensions to the characters not in the book - such as Peter's struggle with pride and conflict with Caspian. I actually think those changes make a bit of sense given the circumstances that Lewis provides in his book. I remember reading Caspian and thinking, "Wouldn't that be hard for the Pevensies to be back in Narnia to help someone else become king?" I’m a huge fan of the books as well. My sister and I were talking about it after reading <i>World</i> magazine's piece about it-- they mentioned the changes and departure from the books.
