Healthy Church 101

Wow.  Couldn’t pass up relating this James Montgomery Boice quote given on the Ligonier Blog.  We pray and speak of being a healthy church at HLPC and this cuts to the heart of it:

Many things are talked about as necessary for the health and growth of the church today. People talk about certain programs as essential. It is true that they are important. We have such a diversified culture that people have their own individual problems. The family is fragmented, and the kind of reinforcement along Christian lines that ought to take place in homes does not always take place. The church is trying to minister specifically at these points through programs. Still, if you think back to the time of the Great Awakening in this country, you will realize that churches at that time had hardly any programs at all, at least nothing that we would recognize as programs. There were no youth groups, no graded Sunday schools, no bowling leagues, no baseball teams. But those churches were healthy. Why? Because they had the faithful preaching of the Word.

I heartily agree - I see the church as a great organizing tool, but we must be careful as to those “sacred cow” programs we feel that the church MUST have. That being said, I think that in today’s world, where there isn’t a lot that is Christ-focused outside of the church, there may need to be some things we do that weren’t done back then. I DO agree that the basis must always be gospel-centered preaching at the core.

Well said. Boice’s point is intriguing in that churches flourished without the latest fads and programs. The Great Awakening occurred without needing 40 days to figure out our purpose.

I imagine if there was 40 days of anything regarding the Great Awakening, it was probably some sort of fasting and prayer.

Boice’s is definitely one of the better articles in the “Feed My Sheep” book, along with Derek Thomas’. I’m currently reading it and am at the halfway mark. I remember being struck by Boice’s point as well. What does it mean for us? What would it look like?

  5. Thomas Says:

The pagans create graven images of their gods, but the covenant God is a God of the Word. It is through God speaking into the darkness the world and all that is in it was created. It is through the preached Word that we are made a new creation. Preach on Paul – preach on…

I think it means not being afraid to cancel a program that isn’t serving a useful purpose.

I also think it means more get-togethers where shooting guns and grilling meat is involved.
